OUGD301 EVALUATION

Final Evaluation
OUGD301
Robyn Russell
LEVEL 06

The main focus for my design practice throughout this module was to bring together; type, branding and print processes. I think by choosing briefs initially that had the potential to cover these areas I set myself up to accomplish this. Having said that, there have been changes throughout this module, that have helped me focus this even more. As I worked through the module, I began to realize that my passion really lay with processes, and finishing instead of focusing on design for screen. Initially I did set out with the hope to improve my web based skills, and although I have taken part in the web workshops I realized that I was more interested in printing and finishing work. Although this has happened in this module, I think I will need to defiantly do some screen based work within FMP because I do want to improve my skills there but it wasn’t the main focus of any briefs that I have done. One thing that  has really improved my knowledge in applying the processes and branding elements is the research that I have done, through going to talks (GBH), research for my dissertation and general research. This has helped influence my decisions in a lot of different ways because I felt I was coming from a more informed perspective. Generally my rational has not changed that dramatically, I have stuck to the key points that I set out to achieve, however the biggest change was dropping working with screen based design.

My briefs throughout this module have changed significantly, what I thought would be my main briefs (Hotel, Publication, ISTD) changed and two became secondary as well as one being completely scrapped (Publication), due to the fact that I felt there was more potential in the other briefs (Processing and D&AD). These were defiantly key decisions I made, the briefs that I expanded and worked on really helped improve my skills working with branding and pushing my design as far as I could, in what I deemed an appropriate way.
As I set out originally to investigate processes, and hopefully transfer them across my briefs I feel I have achieved this. However, spending time on investigating, experimenting with processes defiantly created some issues, there were things I did that worked and others that didn’t at all. For example, the printing plate issue for my poster brief, this took a lot more time that I thought it would and had an impact on the brief as a whole because what I thought would be quite a quick brief ended up spreading across the whole module. What I also learnt with this module was a lot about stocks, and having no real knowledge in this before helped me gain a better understating of the appropriateness of colour, working with pantones etc. I have benefitted a lot from this because my designs are more informed and appropriate. There was another problem with this is as,  I couldn’t print on my chosen stocks as it was expensive to order in reels of the stock. However, I did managed to print samples and I could make a more informed decisions about the stocks I would print on. This is defiantly something I am going to focus on improving my knowledge in, its very important especially when my practice is partially about processes and finishing.

There is a lot a have learnt from each brief, and by outlining what I wanted to gain from them initially has really helped me keep focused what I wanted to get from them. Firstly, with the ‘Poster' Brief I used a variety of different processes, which then lead me on to using the same style of processes in my other briefs, this essentially created a foundation for me to refer back to when it came to designing my other briefs. Secondly, with regards to the Solicitor brief, I learn’t a lot from this brief; working with a live client (and getting paid), creating work with quite a corporate feel and trying to create something that would work in the real world. These are all considerations I hadn’t really had to consider before, this all influenced the designs I created and the deliverables I produced. Thirdly, with both the event promotion briefs I did (D&AD, PROCESSING), this was an area I hadn’t covered before, and although the general idea for them was the same I tried to create different deliverables that worked in different areas in order to cover as much of the areas of event promotion as possible. Another important brief was the design I created in the Hotel brief, although this was by far the most frustrating brief, I was all over the place with it throughout this module, I think the main issue was me thinking it was going to become of my substantial briefs, but as it became eclipsed by other briefs I realized I was left with no clear direction for this brief. Once I had eventually focused on delivering a set of brand guidelines, this helped me deliverer a clear set of outcomes. I think one of the other issues I had with this brief, due to time running out, I didn’t have any printed material for it and compared to my other briefs this was hard for me to accept. However, I am now happy with the proposal I have created, because this is something else I have never really done, and when I did my placement they put proposals together all the time and realizing this, I now have some experience in putting one together. Lastly, my ISTD brief was probably the most enjoyable brief I have done, again I was a bit sporadic when it came to working on this brief, doing little bits here and there, however I treated this brief as a playful brief and I feel I have delivered some strong visuals that I am happy with, and I have learnt more about layout and type with this brief than I did with any of the others, which was why I chose it in the first place.
One thing I realized though-out all these briefs was the power of organization, I think throughout this module I have felt like an ‘organised chaos’. It was only towards the last four weeks that everything seemed to slip into place, or out of place as the case may have been. By setting myself clear deliverables and directions with the briefs helped my design practice an enormous amount. It helped a lot to have a clear direction so that I wasn’t wasting time going down the wrong avenues and I could focus my idea generation and designs for each brief.  Throughout this module I have tried to improve my skills in idea generation, I learnt how important tis was when I did my placement, and I have brought the knowledge I got from my placement such as creating mood-boards, sitting down with them and then drawing from there. This helped open up the potential of my briefs an immense amount and I will defiantly be using the style of working in the future because I have found it to be the one of the most important parts of my design practice. Throughout this module with each brief I have tried to experiment and mock up as much as possible, I have found that I need to see something before I can decided whether its working or not, so I have tried to do this as much as possible, where applicable. I have tried to make each decisions about my briefs as informed as possible, either using knowledge from other briefs I have been working on or researching and experimenting myself.

There are a lot of aspects of this module that I fully intend to take on through to my FMP. Such as my knowledge of processes, techniques that work (and that don’t) stocks, samples and ultimately organization of briefs and setting out a clear set of deliverable’s and direction for the briefs from the beginning. I really feel this module has set me up well for my FMP, and helped me as a designer on the whole. I feel more informed, more confident in myself and I think I can make appropriate decisions now.

Generally I am very happy with the work I have produced throughout this module, it has boosted my confidence working with a live client and having my work sold at the pop up shop. These little things keep me focused and make me want to improve and learn more as a designer. I feel I have produced work that I can now use in my portfolio and I am really starting to find the direction I want my work to go towards.

Type Museum Brief Evaluation

This brief from the very beginning was always about the processes and how I could incorporate them into my designs. And throughout this brief that has not changed, I set out to learn about processes and that is what I have done. What did change was the context with which these processes were used. When I started out I thought it would all be about the typography, the most I experimented the more I realized I didn’t want to create type I wanted to use it. So it became more about the content of the sayings driving both the processes and the designs. This was a lot easier and it made for a more co-he rent brief.
This brief turned out to be the most important brief that I have done, it not only helped me produce some processes heavy posters but those processes then crossed over into my other briefs and really showed me the potential and made me think out of the box when it came to designing things. This ended up being the groundwork that informed a lot of decisions I made in subsequent briefs.
I think what became most apparent with this brief and looking at the others was the work I had done with the laser cutter, whether it be creating stencils to emboss or printing plates, I have used this machine across a variety of different substrates and in many different ways and has opened up so many possibilities, and this wouldn’t have been possible without my investigation into print processes.
I think the hardest element of this brief had to be time management, a lot of the processes I used were very time consuming (taking 2 and a half hours to raster one image for example) and this is the only thing I could learn the hard way, which in turn did have a knock on effect with the brief because I thought it would be a lot smaller than it was and not take as much time. However, I am happy with this because it meant that once I realized it was going to be time consuming I spent more time thinking about the processes I could use and how I could use them.
With each brief I have really pushed myself in getting my ideas down on paper and with this brief this helped immeasurably. I have defiantly changed the way I work for the better and because of this all the decisions I have made are more informed, and I think this brief has a lot to contribute to that factor. Everything I did I had to think about properly before, to try and use my time more efficiently.
This brief has pushed my skills and knowledge in all sorts of areas, and I now know that I can use them in my FMP in a more decisive and clearer way. I did do a lot of experimentation that didn’t work, but this was part of the learning curve (the main fail being with the printing plates, I didn’t have enough knowledge to make them work and they didn’t produce the style of work that I wanted).
I also learnt about different stocks and what was better to showcase the work that I wanted.
Overall this brief has been vital to improving and focusing my design practice, and it encompasses everything I wanted to get out of a brief, and not only did that but informed all the decisions I made in the other briefs. It was like a huge reference point for me, and my idea generation.

What's left

Doing the boards i have now worked out what i need to do with the last remaining briefs in order to get them finished so i can photograph them. I want to get the rest of the design work finished by today and tomorrow (DEC 5th/6th), so that i can start photographing the products tomorrow (DEC 6th/7th). This way the boards will be ready to be produced on Wednesday for Thrusday's crit.

WHAT I NEED TO DO:

ISTD:
- Cut Out postcards
- Cut out posters
- Finish Layouts

HOTEL:
- Need to do room visuals and pull together all photoshopped images

POSTER BRIEF:
- Need to put posters in their frames
- Need to print bellyband

SOLICITOR BRIEF:
- Finish business cards
- Do letterhead print
- Need to buy wax

PROCESSING:
- Re- Print map

D&AD:
- Need to cut out skins for Polaroid's

Board photos and layouts

I have taken each board and do a very rough sketch of how i want the board to be delivered. One of the main things is i need to differentiate which board is which, as for some there are more than others. I have decided to put a band of colour along one side, that will link to the most prominent colour within the brief. this way when you go through them you can see they all link, regardless of the actual page numbers (even though these will be on as well).

Theres still a lot of photography needed to be done, but now i have worked out the exact angles that i want in order to photograph the deliverables in the best way. With some theres definite format that i want them to take whereas others i have done a variation just to see what's best, but i won't know until i have actually taken them.

The minimum amount of boards i am going to produce is 4 and the most is 10. I was a little worried about this because on the brief it says 4-6 boards, but i spoke to Lorenzo on Friday and one of my briefs is very process driven and i need to explain it with each deliverable, other wise it won't really make much sense. So i spoke to Amber this morning and she said that if its appropriate then I can have more than 6 boards. So that's good.. We'll see if that changes come the assessment briefing..

Boards Notes

I spent some time this weekend working out the information for my boards, the content for them and the general layout for them. By doing this i have now established more clearly where i am with each brief, what i need to finish in order to create them and what is the strongest elements of each brief. Unlike last year i want to produce some really professional boards, i think the key element is focusing on whats is the most appropriate elements to go on the boards.
I want to tell the story of the briefs, but i want them to focus mostly on the deliverables then the initial ideas etc, purely because that is all on my blog anyway. If they need to find where a concept came from thats where they go to find it anyway.

More than anything this has really helped me focus on what images of the deliverables that i want, i realise with one brief it is completely photoshopped as this is the most appropriate format for it, so thats just going to be down to me to sort out.

The next stage is to re-produce the layouts and work out roughly how i want each photo on the boards taken, what angles etc. Some of them i have a very distinct idea of what i want, but others its a case of trail and error.

This process has really helped me because its put all my briefs into perspective so now i know exactly what i need to do in order to finish the briefs.

THIS WEEK

So, this week was all about the production side of my briefs. It has actually been a really successful week, i have got loads done and all the deliverables for the D&AD and Processing brief are pretty much done, as well as a significant improvement with the solicitor brief.

WHAT I'VE DONE:

D&AD
Ticket - DONE
Tote - DONE
Publication - DONE
Poster - DONE
Certificate - DONE

Processing
Map - DONE
Tote - DONE
T-shirt - DONE
Tag - DONE
Signage - DONE
Animation - DONE
Poster - DONE
Flyer - DONE

Solicitor
Designs (brand identity) - DONE
Envelope - DONE
Letterhead Holder - DONE

Poster
Packaging - DONE
Rasters - DONE
Less is only - DONE
Mount - DONE

WHAT I NEED TO DO:

D&AD
Polaroid Skin
Display Banners

Processing
Put all together and shoot

Solicitor
Business Card  - NEED STOCK AND LASER CUT EMBOSS
Large Envelope - NEED TO DESIGN
Compliment Slip - NEED STOCK TO PRINT
Letterhead - NEED STOCK TO PRINT
Seal - NEED TO ORDER

(ALL STOCK IS ORDERED WAITING TO BE DELIVERED)

Poster
Need to mount all the posters
Need to photograph them all
Need to do slip to go around box
Need to do small publication of each poster to go into the box
Need to print the three reaming posters onto handmade stock

So generally this is good, the Processing brief is now finished just need to photograph them all together. The D&AD brief is nearly done just need to do the polaroid skin and display banner. With the solicitor brief i need the stocks to come through in order for me to send the rest to print.
Theres still quite a bit to do with the poster brief, but should be no more than 2 days work.
Then i can focus on finishing the ISTD brief and the Crown brief.

Printing processes

In order tog et the right print technique i have done some little samples on the best way to get the print.
OPTION 1 Firstly, i tried embossing the larger prating into stock, this has actually worked out really well, so here i could just print the design onto the appropriate substrate and then emboss the poster with the printing plate. OPTION 2 Secondly, I PVAed the wood and then ran some ink across it to print onto the sheet, after putting loads of PVA on i realised that i had lost all the definition of the print, so it would come out as a huge blob. Which it did. So i then decided to really water the PVA down, and then printing it. This worked out a lot better because the liquid just soaked into the wood, leaving the detail highlighted.

Now, Both options work. Personally i think the best idea for time and print wise will be tog et the designs printed onto the hand made stock and then emboss the designs myself. The MDF will be too thick to fit through the huge roller in the textiles room. I think this will work better and i can get more definition using this technique.

Poster Packaging

Poster Packaging

I managed to start manufacturing my box for my posters. This was really exciting, because i haven't done anything like this before, and being able to see something come from nothing is brilliant. I wasn't allowed to use all the big machinery because unfortunately I'm too small.. Which isn't great but i did get to help out here and there!

We managed to get the frame of the box together and glued, and tonight I have to go pick up some hinges for the lid. Tomorrow will be a case of putting the lid and finishing it, as in sanding and varnishing, if i choose to varnish. I think i will because at the moment it looks untreated and a little cheap.

INTERIM SELF - EVALUATION

General evaluation of my progress, I am working through the briefs in a sporadic way. This hasn’t been a negative thing up until now, not because I haven’t covered the briefs, I am now just confusing myself with the direction of each brief. I need to go through each brief ad systematically evaluate my progress so far and where I need to be with them by next week.

After last weeks tutorial I managed to gain some direction for my briefs, mainly by dropping one of them – ‘the publication brief’ – this was a strategic drop due to the lack of potential in this brief compared to potential in others. Fred made this clear to me in my tutorial, and I agreed with him, my time would be better spent investigating the other briefs I have done and pushing them.

So getting back to this weeks crit, by this crit I wanted to have the 3 briefs I am investigating further in a better position.

As shown on the evaluation sheet I have made quite a lot of progress on two out of the three briefs, the weakest by far being the solicitor brief, and this is because I defiantly went down the wrong avenue of development. With regards to the D&AD brief and Processing, I have now established the appropriate identities for each brief, and as I am process driven. They are now at a stage to start making deliverables. My main worry with this is time, because I’m process driven everything I do has to be produced slowly. And as every brief has elements of being process heavy I need to work out the most strategic way of producing these briefs, quickly, efficiently and successfully – tall order??

So, the next stage is to go through each brief, outline what needs to be done when and how.

BRIEF 1 – POSTERS: All posters are designed, its just a case of getting them produced. 6 out of the 10 are done, it’s the remaining 4 that need to be finished. They need laser cutting, all my slots are booked, and stocks arrived on Wednesday (16th November), so I’m now in a position to get them printed and ready. After this they need packaging – and I am dedicating two days to get that sorted once all the posters are produced.

BRIEF 2 – POSTERS: Publication: As mentioned previously this has been dropped, due to the fact that there is not enough potential in. This brief compared to other briefs. But I want to consider this brief for my FMP. In replacement of this I am turning the Solicitor brief into my second major brief.

BRIEF 3 – POSTERS: Hotel: This brief is currently on hold due to the fact I want to get the other briefs done and out the way. Thus far I have the new identity of the brand, it’s a case of now spending time on the deliverables and getting those designs right.

BRIEF 4 – Competition ISTD: This is my ‘playful’ brief, it has a lot of scope to just play with and get produced, so I am going to do this along with the Hotel brief once the other 3 are delivered.

ADD BRIEF 5 – Solicitor: I still have a lot of development to do with this brief, it is not at the stage that I wanted it to be at by now. So this is something I really need to crack on with, I have the deliverables sorted and they are fairly simple so I need to get the designs nailed.

ADD BRIEF 6 – Processing: I am happy with the stage I’m at with this brief, the designs are done I just need to produce the deliverables. I need to highlight the deliverables again just to make sure I’m getting the most out of them.

ADD BRIEF 7 – D&AD: The design and identity for this brand is done, it’s now a case of producing work. There’s a bit more development I need to go, just different examples, but generally I am ready to produce the design work.

Poster designs thus far

These are the poster designs that i have put together so far, its helped me realise what processes i have been doing, what needs to be done and how they are working together as a whole. I think its really going to be down to the presentation and packaging to pull them all together. They were never meant to look identical, i think its just my obsession with constancy that is making them look a little different and disjointed, but again that was the idea.
There are certain ones that you can only visualise once they are processed but they will be.

I wanted to get my lazer cut and embossed posters done over reading week but they have decided to build a room around the laser cutter so i couldn't get near it.. ANNOYING.

So i am just getting all the designs finished and then i can get them done next week.

BRIEF 1

After my one on one tutorial with Lorenzo, he said that my blogging was good and my progress was good. I did tell him i fell like I'm completely organised but in a chaotic way. Working across 4 briefs at once is quite daunting and challenging, but he said that this is what your ant to be doing, so i guess thats good!

However, he did point out to me that i needed to focus my briefs down from the ones i started out with because they have changed now, only slightly, and i have more of a focus with them so i need to reflect that.

So i have re-written the briefs i am currently doing.

DELIVERABLES: (For each brief i have listed the appropriate deliverables at this time)

A set of 10 posters, each content and process driven.
Focus on typography sayings and the process relating to the content of the saying.
The 10 posters will be a range, to keep them together to work as a whole product there will be colour restrictions: RED, BLACK and WHITE - this is a good restriction and it will work across all the posters.
Each poster will be packaged appropriately, using one type face and the information corresponding across the whole packaging range. The packaging will differ at the posters and their formats differ.

10 posters - packaged.
Within the 10 posters there is a possibility for ranges.
