Embossing and Debossing

I feel like i've had a really productive today, i'm really happy!
Firstly i managed to get my A2 plywood poster frames cut this morning.. after they finished building the room around the laser cutters..
This mean't this afternoon i managed to get some of them embossed and de-bossed up in the print and textiles room. After speaking to them they told me that the most appropriate stock to use would be their handmade stock because it would take the water well and form around the shapes really well.
So following their advice i have done exactly that.

When i first started printing them it was frustrating because the burnt bits from the plywood transferred onto the paper making them really dirty, however after the first couple all the dirt had transferred leaving a clean shape to print with.

I debossed and embossed both the posters to see which had a better effect, i think the embossed works better with larger posters because they have a larger surface area to catch the light. Whereas the smaller posters work better debossed because the light shows up the smaller details more accurately.

Either way i have a range of posters using both the printing techniques.

Im really happy with how they have turned out.

Poster designs thus far

These are the poster designs that i have put together so far, its helped me realise what processes i have been doing, what needs to be done and how they are working together as a whole. I think its really going to be down to the presentation and packaging to pull them all together. They were never meant to look identical, i think its just my obsession with constancy that is making them look a little different and disjointed, but again that was the idea.
There are certain ones that you can only visualise once they are processed but they will be.

I wanted to get my lazer cut and embossed posters done over reading week but they have decided to build a room around the laser cutter so i couldn't get near it.. ANNOYING.

So i am just getting all the designs finished and then i can get them done next week.

Perfection

After my initial ideas for the poster, i wanted to change them. I felt that taking the poster and embossing it would relate more to the content then having it being pulled away. I have kept the same font (Futura) because i wanted it to be clear still and crisp.

Working out

These are the initial poster's that i am using for
my designs, I'm not sure which one yet. I think
it will be the larger as it will have a higher impact.

I am also using these for the Pop-Up shop, and my designs have been
approved.

Embossed and de-bossed.

Poster 2

Seeing as my theme is to create the images using both black and red, with variations,
i decided to change the triangle into red. Again this has a higher visual impact, it also
creates an interesting pattern in the background. Because i felt after looking at the triangles that
the within the pattern it was really hard to distinguish the triangle shape, so i overlaid a large
triangle pattern, this just gives it definition and makes the pattern really stand out.

Initial layout for the poster.

I've added the quote, so that it is even clearer what the
poster is about. I have used the same font across
the poster, adding continuity.

Poster 2

I decided to go back and re-visit the triangle poster. I really wasn't happy with the initial ideas that i had been trying out. The concept still being using a triangle in some form.
So i decided to take on the shape of the triangle, but use type to create the triangle form, that way it still revolves around using type to create the image.
From that i decided that instead of just having the triangle form on its own, it'd look like a better formation overlapped, visually this creates more impact.

General concept of chaos and triangles.

Using the triangles to create a structured chaotic pattern.

Triangle form using a lower case 't', using avant garde gothic,
with its thin stroke and heavy weight it creates definition whilst
creating the triangle pattern.

Poster 2

This poster i am focusing on the simplicity of type and the process and interaction with the poster. The main thing about this poster will be the layout and the appropriate format of the interaction. The idea being that you can 'pull away' the 'excess' text. There are a variety of ways that this can be done. I have chosen a simple and well defined type face because i want it to have high impact, and be legible from a distance. The narrow weight and the extended x-height means it will take up more space, but still be clear. There will be a lot of white space to play around with, adding to the visual impact of the poster. Simplicity is the key with this one.

The idea behind this poster is having the vinyl overlapping the
bottom part of the text, with a tab that you can pull away to reveal
the text behind it. I like this is but I'm not sure about having a huge bit of plastic
left dangling off the poster.

I have played with a variety of different layouts, as i said i want there to be quite a lot of white space, so spreading the type around the page will vary the impact of the white space.

By having the text directly in the middle, it has immediate impact and the
hierarchy on the page delivers the phrase in a informative way, and its clear and legible
to read.
I just altered the layout slightly and raised the text, this means being placed
along the top means that there is a huge gap at the bottom, delivering the eye
straight to the top. By doing this it means it has quite a commanding feel to it,
but I'm not sure that works. If it were an informative poster then it would, but thats
not the aim of the poster.

I have split the text across the whole page, using the whole A2 sheet, i think
this works quite well but I'm not sure impact wise it has as good as feel as things placed
in the middle. I think i would have to see it before i could use it.

Poster 2 / Poster 4

Some development of ideas, and more initial ideas for both the 2nd and 4th poster. I just needed tog et some things down on paper before the ideas ran away with me. I'm still in the process of coming up with ideas, so they'll probably be more posts like this.

Triangle Poster

I started putting together ideas for my third poster, "For me typography is a triangular relationship between design idea, typographic elements and printing technique". I have really struggled with this idea, i know what i want to create but I'm struggling to actually create it so theres a lot of playing around happening.

This is the last idea i have come up with, after getting some advice from people
of the course they told me it would be easier to work with one word instead of
working with the whole saying, as it was getting very difficult to fit it all in. I am not
too sure about this, it defiantly works a lot better than the previous designs but it's
still not creating the image i want.

I attempted to fit the whole phrase inside the triangle i had created using illustrator, and using the
really angled text, but this has ended up being really unclear. Its quite frustrating.

After failing at trying to get the original text i had chosen into the
triangle i have chosen to look at using different fonts, i did some more research and found some
that were more applicable. again though I'm not sure whether they work properly. I think
they are all a little too strong, and don't really reflect the look I'm going for.
