Embossing and Debossing

I feel like i've had a really productive today, i'm really happy!
Firstly i managed to get my A2 plywood poster frames cut this morning.. after they finished building the room around the laser cutters..
This mean't this afternoon i managed to get some of them embossed and de-bossed up in the print and textiles room. After speaking to them they told me that the most appropriate stock to use would be their handmade stock because it would take the water well and form around the shapes really well.
So following their advice i have done exactly that.

When i first started printing them it was frustrating because the burnt bits from the plywood transferred onto the paper making them really dirty, however after the first couple all the dirt had transferred leaving a clean shape to print with.

I debossed and embossed both the posters to see which had a better effect, i think the embossed works better with larger posters because they have a larger surface area to catch the light. Whereas the smaller posters work better debossed because the light shows up the smaller details more accurately.

Either way i have a range of posters using both the printing techniques.

Im really happy with how they have turned out.

Solicitor Proposal

I have put together a short proposal to send to my client, it has basically pulled together the two separate ideas and explained them fully to the client. I don't want them to get confused or unsure about what everything represents.
I have laid it out in the most clear and appropriate way in order to delver the information. I really hope they go for one of the designs because i have really enjoyed working on this.

Solicitor Brief

// I have put together some swatches, just to help gage the appropriate colour scheme to use across the brand. I don't want it to be dull but i think it would be more appropriate to use colours associated to the brand, especially with the leaf colours. So i decided to take that and create some varied swatches, the bases forming around browns greens reds etc.

After going throughout them i decided that they still looked a little dull, so i decided the best thing to do would be to pull them together. Im very aware that my client doesn't have a lot of money so if these were to go to print then i need to keep them very restricted. At the moment i have set on a 5 colour palette but i think i may narrow that down.

I have taken my favourite colours and done a test run with the leaf logo just to get some idea of how it would work. I think it works really well, especially with the invesing. The designs stand out and deliver a visual punch of colour.

I have sketched some ideas, now that i have the basic logo, in order to work out the placement of the type in relation to the information. It's important that they all compliment.
To remind me, i re-checked the brief, they want a 'classy but modern' and i think looking at the designs that the leaf encompasses more of this then the CT, however there could be some really nice finishes involving these logos.

I took the type design, and altered the direction of the lines. This actually gives a clearer definition between the C and the T. It also creates a different patterned visual, which again i think could be interesting to work with. Generally I'm happy with the concept of this logo, i think the next stage will be to add the type to the letters to see how that effects the logo.

Taking on the development of the single leaf, i really liked the detailed inside of the logo, and i think with an appropriate finish it could be really strong. So i decided to work on this and perfect all its angles, and see how it would look. Overall I'm really happy with the development, and i think the next key stage is picking the appropriate font for the name and information.

I have expanded the design and tried it in some smaller sizes, just to see that it would work in a range of sizes and still would be able to pick up the detail. I have changed it to black and white as i am not too sure what colours i am going to be using so i think working with it black and white at the moment is more appropriate.

Taking on the other larger leaf design, the ivy, i have taken the same concept as the previous design and overlaid it for it to create a pattern.

To be honest when i originally did this, i didn't like it. It looked really large and complicated. However, as with the other design i filled them in. I am really happy with the way it looks, i think it creates a really an attractive symbol and could work quite well across the identity.

After looking at the original designs, i decided to take two of the leaf designs and further their development. Firstly i have chosen to take the single leaf, i am really happy with the way the designs progressed.
At one stage it did look a little bit like a lilly..which wasn't exactly brilliant..nor the desired look.
So by adding more leaves and reversing it out i could get a clearer idea of what the overall shape would look like.

I decided to take the leaf logo, and develop it more. So i decided to research some typically english leaves, taking in the elements from a standard Ivy lead and a normal leaf found on the average tree. I did a basic outline to start with, just so i could get a feel for the design.
Out of the three i defiantly prefer the middle one and the far right, they just have more of a workable pattern within them and i think they could, with further development, create some interesting logos that would have scope to transfer across the identity.

Im not a massive fan of this design, but i have a funny feeling that they may like it due to the stuff thats already out there..i think maybe with some significant tweaking it could be passible, but its defiantly my least favourite out of the three..

I have vectored the second idea of using the leaves. Not happy with the leaf shape at all and its something i am defiantly going to have to tweak and change to make it look more like a leaf..but i just wanted to see if i could see the potential in the design and as it stands. No. But i think with more development it could be quite strong.

I have added some colour just to show how i would define each of the letters, i won't be using this colour palette. And i added the text, because i plan on using serifed fonts to bring in the old rustic feel, i don't want the branding to go to far in the modern way because i don't think that it will look like a professional law firm.

Initial working out for for the first logo, completely modern take on their logo. Using Helvetica, making it 'young' theres a lot of potential with this logo for processes and the style of the branding.

_____________

These are the designs i took from my initial working out, i have wilted them down to 3 designs that i will now take on further. they are all different. I think the main plan is to pick 3, do some variations get an overall concept brand together and then email it through and see what James thinks, and then go on from there.

Solicitor brief

After looking into my research, i was pretty uninspired with the work produced by law teams and designs who have done something from solicitors. So when it came to creating ideas, it was pretty much down to coming up with something i'd seen for other things, such as the hotel etc.

Some of the initial ideas, surrounded the tree concept
my only worry with this is it may not convey it being a
company about law but instead a company about trees?!

After creating some fairly basic ideas, i have taken the ones i am
more interested in and have sketched them a little bit neater
so you can actually see the shape of them.

Poster designs thus far

These are the poster designs that i have put together so far, its helped me realise what processes i have been doing, what needs to be done and how they are working together as a whole. I think its really going to be down to the presentation and packaging to pull them all together. They were never meant to look identical, i think its just my obsession with constancy that is making them look a little different and disjointed, but again that was the idea.
There are certain ones that you can only visualise once they are processed but they will be.

I wanted to get my lazer cut and embossed posters done over reading week but they have decided to build a room around the laser cutter so i couldn't get near it.. ANNOYING.

So i am just getting all the designs finished and then i can get them done next week.

Poster

For the designers are meant to be loved, my initial idea was to create some 3D type,
using digital work. But i decided this wasn't exactly the idea i wanted to create
and i wanted to use some more processes.
SO, after looking at some research, the embossing work i have seen has
inspired me to create something that would be embossed into the page, so it
can create a pattern or just stand out.
I want to emboss it, which means i can get the design cut on the laser cutter
and then get it embossed in the screen print room, or down at vernon street.

Poster

I decided to change the phrase 'My words fly up the page..' by shakespeare. It didn't really have ugh relevance so i changed it to another saying i had which is 'art is the triumph over chaos'. This just has more that i can do with it, it relates more to the theme i am doing and i think visually it can look a lot better.

Using the same sort of idea i had for the triangle poster, i have decided to create a chaotic background image, but have the type overlaid.

Perfection

After my initial ideas for the poster, i wanted to change them. I felt that taking the poster and embossing it would relate more to the content then having it being pulled away. I have kept the same font (Futura) because i wanted it to be clear still and crisp.

Working out

These are the initial poster's that i am using for
my designs, I'm not sure which one yet. I think
it will be the larger as it will have a higher impact.

I am also using these for the Pop-Up shop, and my designs have been
approved.
